For a second generation immigrant who has barely had time to navigate the racial and socioeconomic landscapes of the United States, planting myself in South Africa, an equally, if not more racially polarising country, transformed how I looked at the world. The experience brought equal shares of self-confidence, disillusionment, heartbreak, friendship, loneliness, and just about everything else on the emotional spectrum. In a sense, I’m writing to remember, to recall how I welcomed intrepid adventure and endured isolation on a daily basis.
