Although the film is centered around science, it is not a science documentary in the traditional sense. My director came from a visual arts background, and I complimented that with my knowledge in classical music. It was in this edit where I first noticed how much my musical training affected my cutting: when to use crescendo, accelerando, ritardando. Going from forte to pianissimo. Or, even more simply, when to be silent.

Because some of the scientific concepts discussed cannot be detected by human senses, we had to find new and creative ways to express them through visual and aural means. My director told me, “push as far as you can, and if we go off a cliff, we’ll reign it back in.”

With my director’s encouragementI, this film was the first time where I really experienced, on an emotional level, the meaning of exploration. It takes willingness to face trial and error. It takes accepting mistakes. It takes the courage, and perhaps delusion, to say, “try, fail, try, fail, but try again.”
