Ashima (2023)

The film follows Ashima Shiraishi, a 13-year-old climbing prodigy, as she tackles one of the most difficult bouldering problems in the world. The particular climb had challenged fully grown men who were stronger with longer limbs. The film explores immigrant family dynamics, persistence in the face of obstacles, and the sacrifices behind becoming an elite athlete.

Much of this film happens in one location, under one rock. The challenge of the film was knowing how to create novelty within visual repetition, and how to create pacing dynamism by leaving the main setting during key points in the story.

My approach to the edit was informed by my own immigrant upbringing with strict parents. But also, I had to keep a listening ear out to my producer, who often chimed in with her perspective growing up as a teenage girl in an Asian American family.
